There are over 40 universities, academies and institutions of higher education located in Bulgaria. The majority of them can be found in the central and west of Bulgaria, but there are also some located in the east (cities of Varna, Shoumen and Bourgas) and the north of the country (Rousse, Svishtov). Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, alone has 17 universities which makes it a popular destination for international students. The cities with the second most universities are Varna, located on the coast of the Black Sea, and Plovdiv which can be found approximately 160 km to the south east of Sofia. One reason for Bulgarias popularity with foreign students is the low coast of living and the lower fees that are required. Another reason is that most of the universities and institutes for higher education provide facilities with a high quality and European standards. Some of the most important universities in Bulgaria are the Higher Medical Institutes in Plovdiv and Pleven, the Medical University in Sofia, the American University in Blagoevgrad, the University of Economy in Varna, the Technical Universities in Sofia, Gabrovo and Varna, the Shoumen University and the University of Sofia.
