| Sunny Beach is the largest (and sunniest) beach resort in Bulgaria. It is a wide semicircular bay facing east which is covered with fine golden sand and is over eight kilometres long. It has the Balkan Range of mountains to its north and is surrounded by natural dunes where over sixteen rare varieties of plant grow. The sea here is very calm and non tidal with a gently sloping bottom. The resort has a prestigious Blue Flag award for cleanliness and good ecological practice.
It lies just 35 km north of the city of Bourgas,95 km from Varna and has a small peninsula to its south on which the ancient town of Nessebar is located.
It is a very accessible resort with regular boat and bus connections to Bourgas and Varna. Bourgas International Airport handles a large number of charter flights from the UK and Germany during the summer season.
The beaches offer every water sport imaginable including windsurfing, water and jet skiing, paragliding, hang gliding, banana boats, sailing, pedalos and canoeing. If you prefer your sports on dry land then there are tennis courts, beach volleyball, mini-golf, skittles, bowling, horse riding and a sports centre with a fully equipped gymnasium.
There is plenty of evening entertainment too. To give you some idea of the range of facilities available there is a Variety Bar offering a floorshow and casino; a Russian Troika Restaurant which has shows, music and dance; a period frigate which has been converted into a very atmospheric restaurant and Khan's Tent which stages a traditional folklore show and serves Bulgarian cuisine.
