Rousse is a regional centre which is situated on the right bank of the Danube river near to the mouth of Rusenski Lom River. It is 320 km north-east of Sofia, 203 km north-west of Varna and 106 km north-east of Veliko Turnovo.
It is an old Bulgarian town, which is also the most important settlement on the the River Danube where it is also known as Little Venice becuase of its ancient architecture In Medieval times Rousse was one of the most developed and prosperous regions in Bulgaria, and during Ottoman Rule it became an important harbour and strong border fortress. During the nineteenth century Rousse was considered the most European Bulgarian town with a flourishing economy.
About 200 of the buildings in Rousse are listed as architectural historical heritage sites. Places of interest of the town include the Leventabia Fortress, Mahmud Column, St.Trinity church and monuments to those, who perished in the 1885 Serbian-Bulgarian War.There is an Opera House, Philharmonic Orchestra, Theatre of Drama "Sava Ognyanov" and a Puppet Theatre.
