Bulgaria Information

Montana is the centre of an administrative region situated in northwestern Bulgaria along the banks of the Ogosta river. It originated in Roman times as a fortress, became a town in 1891 and has been called Montana since 1991. The region includes the western plain of the River Danube. This, together with the numerous dams here, which include the Montana, Drenovets, Hristo Smirnenski, Kovachitsa and Shishmanov val offers a wide variety of water sports and fishing activities.

The natural reserves of Gornata Koriya and Ibisha, and the protected areas of Kopren, Ravno buche, Kalimanitsa and Deyanitsa are full of old beech forests, waterfalls and cascades, rocky outcrops and glades full of wood crane's bill.

The major towns are Montana (district centre), Lom (administrative centre and harbour on the River Danube), Kozlodui and Byala Slatina, There is the Roman fortress of Kastra ad Montanesium just south of Montana with a history museum exhibiting collections of tools, armour, and jewellery dating back to Prehistoric, Roman and Thracian times. If you visit the villages of Belotnitsa, Ohrid, Yakimovo and Mokresh you will see the remains of prehistoric settlements.

Montana City Information

Montana with a population of 55,000 is a city in northwestern Bulgaria and the administrative centre of Montana Province. It is located 50 km south of the Danube and 40 km northwest of Vratsa. It is situated on the Ogosta river, north of Stara Planina, surrounded on the south and east by uplands.

Belogradchik Information

Belogradchik is a town in the northwestern region of Bulgaria, it has a population of 6,700 and is located in the Vidin Province close to Dimovo. The town is a popular toursit destination. An important landmark is the mediaeval Belogradchik Fortress. The Belogradchik Observatory is located nearby.

Vidin Information

Vidin is 25 metres above sea level on the lowest terrace along the Danube River. It is located 199 km northwest of the city of Sofia and 102 km northwest of the town of Montana. The different architecture and styles of the Romans, medieval Bulgaria, Turkish, post Liberation and new Vidin have formed a beautiful and fascinating town. The large River Danube forms a border between Bulgaria and Romania and runs through Vidin. Here you can swim, sunbathe, fish and try out a wide variety of water sports.

Vratza Information

Vratza with a population of 14,832, is one of the most picturesque cities in the country. The town is only 116km from the Bulgarian capital Sofia. The name of the town of Vratsa itself comes from the name of the spectacular gorge Vratsata (the Door) on Leva river.
