Melnik is the smallest village in Bulgaria with just 230 inhabitants. It is situated on the lower plains of the Pirin Mountain with white houses with large bay windows surrounded by vegetation and cliffs. It has an excellent climate for the treatment of chronic pulmonary, kidney and rheumatic disorders.
It was once an important economic centre with a population in excess of 25,000, 1,300 houses and more than 70 churches. Although the ancient Thracians laid the foundations of the village, there is evidence of influence from the Slavs, Bulgarians, Greeks, Romans and Turks. It is a centre for deep red, matured wine with vineyards situated in the sand pyramids surrounding the town where original cellars have been excavated.
This technology is unique to Melnik.
It is a wonderful place to visit with many historic attractions, museums, a monastery, fortress, churches and old houses.
