The town of Madara is one of the most popular and important towns in the country. Shoumen is situated about 1.5 km to the south-west of Madara and Varna can be found in a distance of approximately 70 km to the east. The reason of the town's popularity is the famous Madara horseman which is a rock relief from the 8th century and was hewn in a height of 23 metres. For those who are interested in the history of the region: the horseman can be visited in the Madara Archaeological Reserve which is located approximately 17 km from the town itself. The man on the horse, the dog that is following him and the dying lion which is pictured at the feet of the horse are symbolising the victory and power of the country. Due to the historical magnificence of the Archaeological Reserve and especially the horseman, both are protected by the UNESCO. |
