The town of Lovech is an administrative region in Bulgaria which sits on the banks of the River Osam 200 metres above sea level and 170 km. to the northwest of Sofia, 35 km. to the south of Pleven, 35 km. to the north of Troyan, and 86 km. to the west of Veliko Tarnovo.
It was originally a fortress during the Middle Ages and is one of the oldest towns in Bulgaria. Because of its strategic location it has always played an important part in history used as a centre of defence vy the Romans, Thracians, Turks, Russians and Ottomans.
Today it is a beautiful and modern town, which retains all the tradition and charm of a bygone era. There are plenty of attractions in the historic town including various museums, houses which have been preserved to show how different social levels of Bulgarian families lived in the past, fortresses and the old part of the town which is an architectural and historic reserve called Varosha.
Lovech is bordered by the regions of Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo, Stara Zagora and Plovdiv. The two main transport motorways pass through Sofia, Sevlievo, Veliko Tarnovo Shumen and Botevgrad, Koritna and Byala. Another major transport link is II - 35 road which runs through the Troyan - Karnare Balkan pass and forms the north/south connection between the regions of Pleven and Plovdiv.
