Haskovo is situated 200 metres above sea level on the banks of the Haskopvska River which runs through the Haskovo Hills, forming part of the Eastern Rhodopes. It lies 225 km to the south-east of Sofia; 64 km south of Stara Zagora and 70 km north-west of Svilengrad.
Haskovo is one of the oldest settlements is Bulgaria dating back to the neolithic period. It celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 1985.
There are good transport communication links here with a bus connecting the town to Dimitrovgrad, Harmanli, Lyubimets, Svilengrad, Stambolov and numerous other towns and villages in the surrounding region. The railway opeates along the Rousse - Toulovo - Podkova line.
The sports and leisure amenities here are excellent with the Kenana natural Park offering a variety of recreational activities. The Haskovo Mineral Baths is just 15 kilometres to the west of Haskovo (an hourly bus service runs here from the centre of town). There is an open pool and twelve mineral water springs with a temperature of 48.5°C which are excellent for joint and bone diseases, as well as some gynaecological disorders. This is also a starting point for the hiking tours which follow marked trails through the Eastern Rhodopes.
The Sharapani are about an hour's walk from the Bath and are well worth a visit. They are unique Thracian wineries with enormous grape vessels carved out of rock and connected by channels transporting the fluid.
