All of the international schools that can be found in the country of Bulgaria are located in the capital Sofia. There are a total of six international schools available in the city.
The American College of Sofia is the most well known one of all of them. It was founded in 1860 and therefore counts as the oldest and most established educational institution outside the USA. Its departments are Arts, Bulgarian Languages, English Languages, Foreign Languages, Computer Science, ESL (English as a Second Language), Mathematics, Science Department, Social Science and Sports. Language courses are also available not only in English but also in Bulgarian.
Another international school in Sofia is the American English Academy which offers classes from kindergarten to grade 12 with an American curriculum. The aim of the institution is to teach the necessary and foundational education in the English language and to assist students to make the right decisions for their future life. The majority of children are ESL and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students.
The Anglo-American School of Sofia has been inaugurated in 1967. It was founded by British and American embassies and is located on the foothills of the Vitosha Mountain. Today (2006) the school has a total of 189 children from 40 countries in the ages between 3 and 14. Some of the classes that are taught in the school are Art, Music, French, Bulgarian Culture, Bulgarian Language, ESA, LE (Language Enrichment), Physical Education and Information & Technology.

Founded in 1995, the Zlatarski International School became an IB school (International Baccalaureate) in 2003. It joined the IBO a short time after to pick up on the international standards that are required to prepare its students for the entry in not only Bulgarian Universities but also in those abroad. It was in 2005 at the Zlatarski International School that, for the first time in Bulgaria, the IB exams took place.

The Deutsche Schule Erich Kästner was founded by 12 parents in 1995. The aim of the founders was to create an extraordinary school for children in Bulgaria. The school offers classes from kindergarten to secondary school, which is both taught in Bulgarian and German. English is the second foreign language. The school uses the German curriculum which has been approved by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education.
Ecole Victor Hugo Sofia is a boy's school for the ages from 3 to 16. Momentarily there are 183 boys in the institution which are taught with a French curriculum in the French language.
