Bourgas is situated in south east Bulgaria and is the fourth largest city in the country. It has the largest sea port in Bulgaria and a Duty Free Zone was established in 1989 to attract foreign investors. Offering seaside resorts including Slantchev Bryag and the Elenite and Duni holiday villages and a city famous for its architecture and culture, Bourgas is an excellent area in which to spend your holidays.
Pomorie Lake is 20 km north of Bourgas surrounded by salt-mines and balneo-resorts. Atanassovo Lake is situated between the airport and the city, and is 10 km long and once a nesting site for many marsh and sea birds migrating from Gibraltar and the Bosphorus. Part of the lake is now a natural reserve with areas for fishing, swimming and sunbathing. Bourgas Lake is a nesting site for pelicans, ibis, and herons.
St. Anastassia Island is three nautical miles east of the city and was used for the exile of left-wing revolutionaries and anti-Fascists during the 1920s and 1940s respectively.
There are mineral water baths 13km north-west Bourgas on the road to Aitos which are built on the remains of an old Roman town called Aetos. The present baths date back to the sixteenth century when Bulgaria was ruled by the Ottoman Empire and are still functioning today with curing mud bath, balneo-spa and polyclinic.
There are too many attractions and things to do to list them all here, but finally two Bulgarian resorts which are worth visiting and which are located close to Bourgas are Nessebar and Sozopol.
