| Borovetz is the oldest, largest and premier mountain resort in Bulgaria. It is situated 1350 metres above sea level on the northern slopes of the pine covered Rila Mountain. It sits at the foot of the Mussalal peak, which at 2925 metres is the highest in the Balkan Peninsula. It is an easily accessible resort just 73km from Sofia and 126km from Plovdiv. The town of Samokov is only 10km down the road from Borovetz with a bus running there every thirty minutes.
The clean air here is pollution free and the climate is not to hot during the summer months and mild and snowy during the winter. Borovetz has over 45 km of ski runs of varying difficulty grouped in the three regions of Sitnyakovo, Markoudjik and Yastrebets. The slopes and runs are excellently maintained and designed with international markings and multilingual signs. Because of its excellent conditions for winter sports, it attracts thousands of skiiers every year. It has hosted World Cup Alpine skiing rounds twice and the biathlon track is one of the best in the world.
The ski school has more than 200 ski instructors who offer an excellent range of classes. There are ten ski hire shops next to the lift station at the ski runs. The cablecar to the peak of the Yastrebets is the most popular with a capacity for up 1200 people per hour and a journey time of twenty three minutes. There are also marked hiking trails to various sites in Rila and to mount Mussala which takes six hours.
