There are four international airports in Bulgaria with the largest being located in Sofia. Plovdiv is mainly used by charter companies for the ski resort at Pamporovo, and Varna and Bourgas are used for domestic flights from Sofia and charter flights carrying passengers keen to visit the beach resorts during the summer months.
Sofia International Airport handles over 1.2 million passengers every year. It has three terminals: A deals with passengers within the boundaries of the Ukraine: B with international flights and has a variety of shops (including duty free outlets), cafes, bar and restaurants situated on the first floor: C is used exclusively for VIP passengers and offers business and conference services.
Bourgas regional airport is situated 12 km from the town of Burgas. Bourgas Airport has a restaurant, bar, bureau de change, bank, duty free shop, post office and first aid centre. Most flights are charters carrying passengers travelling under package deals.
The majority of travellers are transported to their final destination by the tour operator, but taxis are available outside the arrivals hall and local buses serve the airport.
Plovdiv Airport serves the south of Bulgaria and specialises in handling passengers from charter flights who arrive during the winter months from December to April to holiday at the ski resorts in Pamprovo and Borovetz, which are 60km and 90km from the airport respectively.
Plovdiv Airport is a one and half hour drive from the capital city of Sofia and can be reached via motorway or the Polvdiv-Assenovgrad railway link which stops at a station about one kilometre from the airport. There is parking here for 50 cars and 20 buses.
Varna regional airport serves the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria and is situated on the western outskirts of Varna about 9km from the town centre. It is at its busiest during the summer months, as it handles charter flights bringing package holidaymakers to the seaside resorts.
The 409 bus at the airport passes through central Varna and travels as far as the Golden Sands resort. Taxis are available, but as the meters often do not work it is advisable to agree a fare with the driver before departure. Many resort hotels run their own shuttle services to and from the airport.
You can hire a car from one of the car rental agents who are based at the airport. Varna Airport has a large restaurant, bureau de change and duty free shopping.
