If you are planning a trip to the eastern part of the Balkan Mountains make sure you visit the architectural reserve of Zeravna which is a small town which has been perfectly perserved.
It sits in a shallow valley 650 metres above sea level on the southern slopes of the mountains. It is 16km from the nearest town at Kotel and 110km from the Black Sea Coast.
It is a fascinating village with sympathetically restored seventeenth and eighteenth century architecture featuring over 300 houses, inns, shops and fountains. The ground floors of the houses are built of stone and the upper floors are made of oak. They are so close to each other that their roofs touch and if viewed from above resemble cubes. The ceilings are of carved wood and the doors, windows and icon stands are real works of art. In every room the walls, floors or beds are covered by beautiful local carpets and you could still live in them comfortably today. Some of the houses have been turned into museums and the old school is an art gallery.
