Tryavna is a popular tourist town situated in the Stara Planina Mountain in the valley of the Trevnenska River. Its clean mountain air, evergreen forests and crystal waters all make this a beautiful area to visit. It has 12,000 inhabitants and is situated 440 metres above sea level with an excellent road and railway network.
The Tryavna is the oldest Renaissance Art School in Bulgaria where local craftsmen learn the art of masonry, woodcarving and icon painting which is one of the main areas of employment here. Master builders including Usta Dimitar, Usta Gencho, the wood-carvers Dimitar Oshanetza, Papa Vitan, Pop Vitanov, and icon-painters Zaharievski, Minevski, Minchevski, Vitanovski, Venkovski, and Kanchevski were all taught at the Tryavna School and became famous not only in Bulgaria, but also in Vlashko, Serbia, Turkey, and Persia.
The old part of the town has been declared an architectural reserve with about 140 monuments of National Revival architecture incuding the set piece square named after Captain Dyado Nikola; the Clock tower erected in 1844; and the Arch bridge built in 1845 by Dimitar Sergiov. The oldest building on the square is the Medieval church of St Archangel Michael which is a national monument of culture.
Nearby attractions include the architectural reserve of Bojentzi 28 km west of Tryavna along the road through Dryanovo; about 18 km north-west are located the Bacho Kiro cave and Dryanovo Monastery. The spa resort of Voneshta voda is 15 km east from Tryavna.
