The beautiful town of Teteven is 410 metres above sea level. It has 12,762 inhabitants and is situated in the region of Stara planina which 118km from Sofia, 74 km from Lovech and 60km from Troyan.
Teteven dates back to ancient times with evidence of human inhabitants being found in the caves of Morovitsa, Baiovitsa and Draganchovitsa. There are numerous funeral mounds which date back to the Thracians and also traces of Roman roads, bridges and watch-towers can be seen.
Teteven is famous for its plum brandy and every year at the beginning of the May the biggest mountain cycling race on the Balkan Peninsula is held here.
Regular bus services operate to Sofia, Vratsa , Pleven, Lovech and Veliko Tarnovo, as well as most settlements within the region.
The village of Ribaritsa is a famous mountain resort which is 12km to the east. It is one of the longest villages in Bulgaria with numerous holiday homes, country-houses, private hotels and bars and restaurants. It is one of the main departure points for tourists in the Teteven Balkan.
Close to Teteven are the observation areas of "Georgi Benkovski", "Eho" and "Vejen" are in the natural protected reserve of "Chernia Rot" where ornithologists can watch a wide variety of birds.
