The town of Targovishte is a regional and municipal centre in southeastern Bulgaria situated on the fertile Danubian plain, 170 metres above the sea level 339 km. northeast of Sofia, 41 km. west of Shoumen, 25 km. northwest of Veliki Preslav and at 100 km. northeast of Veliko Tarnovo. The city is near to the country border points of Varna (110 km) and Rousse (100km) which makes it a natural strategic crossroads.
It is a historic town with more than thirty interesting architectural buildings in the old Renaissance quarter called Varosh .
The Targoviste spring is located 8 km. southwest of the town where the water temperature is 27oC and the rate about 6 litres per second. There is a regular bus service here from the centre of town.
In the environs of Targovishte is a hunting park, Yukya forest, the Borovo Oko Lake and the Park in the Targovishte gorge.
