Silistra is located 20 metres above the sea level on the right bank of the River Danube. It is 442 km. northeast of Sofia and 122 km. from Rousse.
Until the Second World War Silistra was an important town with its strategic location forming part of the military quadrangle Varna-Silistra-Razgrad-Shoumen. After 1945 it became a sleepy border settlement with economic activity revolving round the port which was the main outlet for the grain from the Dobroudzha plain. It was only during the 1970s that industries such as as wood processing, machine-building, food and wine, and electronics started to develop here.
It is a beautiful historic town with many attractions including the Museum of Archaeology which one of the most modern in the country, displaying unique cultural memorials dating back to the Romans and medieval times.
The Srebarna nature reserve is 16 km from Silistra. It was named a world monument by UNESCO in 1984 and is the only place in Bulgaria where you wil find the curly headed pelican.
