Plovdiv is situated 160 metres above sea level in the western part of the Upper Thracian Valley 150 km from Sofia, 19 km from Assenovgrad, 102 km from Smolyan and 90 km from Stara Zagora. It ranks as the second largest Bulgarian city in population and size after the Capital of Sofia with 376,276 inhabitants.
The area dates back to the New Stone, Stone-Copper and Bronze Ages.
It is a beautiful place to visit surrrounded by six hills, and the
Maritza River which splits the town into two uneven parts which are connected by six bridges.
There is an International Fair held here twice a year. In May it is concerned with consumer goods and commodities and in September it focuses on industrial products.
