Most of the year the Plovdiv airport is used as a military base, but during the winter months (season is from December to April), when many tourists are coming to this region to take advantage of one of the ski resorts that are located in the area, it is also operating international charter flights. The city of Plovdiv is situated only 12 km to the north-west, which makes it easy for tourists as well as business travellers to get there. Flights from numerous airports (UK: Bristol, East Midlands, London Gatwick, Manchester and Newcastle) in several countries are operated at the new passenger terminal that has been opened in 2005. There are 2 runways and an apron with 8 standings on which airplanes up to 190 tons can land and park. Passengers can take advantage of the 4 check-in desks, a long and short term car park, numerous shops which includes duty free shopping facilities, travel agents, first aid services, disabled facilities, a gift shop, cafeterias, a Bureau de Change and a fully equipped VIP lounge. A taxi rank and a bus station can be found outside the arrivals hall. For those who want to rent a car, car hire desks are located within the terminal and road connections to the city and to most ski resorts are excellent. |
