Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria situated on the two banks of the Maritsa river and on six syenite hills called "tepeta". During Roman times it was given the name of Trimontium ("town on three hills"), and was called Plovdiv by the Slavs.
The city is divided into two parts: the old town Stariyat Grad occupies the three eastern hills, and the lower modern town is on the plain below. The new town offers lively entertainment and is a trade and culture centre with restaurants, bars, cinemas and shops. There is an excellent Rowing Canal which is a modern complex where national and international sporting events take place. It is a very attractive place where you can go for a walk, roller skate or cycle and it is the favourite weekend place for the people of Plovdiv.
The old town is steeped in the tradition and culture of the original city with the ancient part being an architectural reserve. Among the many attractions you can see are the ruins of a Roman stadium, forum, several mosques and original Turkish Baths.
