Pliska is a beautiful small village, located 140 metres above sea level and with a population of only 1243. It belongs to the province of Shumen and can be found in the south of the Ludegorie plateau, approximately 400 km to the north-east of Sofia. In former times, the village of Pliska was known as Aboda, until in 1925 the name was changed to Pliskov and finally in 1947 into Pliska. Ruins of the former-day town of Pliska, which has been Bulgaria's first capital, can be found within 2 km of the village. It was divided into the outer city and the inner city. In the centre of the town you will still be able to visit the ruins of the citadel which was surrounded by solid and high stone walls and defence fortifications. There also has been a secret tunnel that connected the 2920 square metres church (Gran Basilica) with the palace. This and many other historical highlights are located either in the old village of Pliska or in the present-day town, where nowadays bus lines and a railway station at 6 km distance are connecting the village with Shoumen, Novi Pazar, Kaspichan, Varna, Sofia, Rousse, Bourgas, Silistra and other towns and cities.
