The town of Pazardjik is a regional centre which sits 205 metres above sea level on the banks of the Maritsa River 114 km. southeast of Sofia, 36 km. west of Plovdiv, 20 km. north of Peshtera and 43 km. south of Panagyurishte.
It was founded in 1845 on the site of a previous settlement and called Tatar Pazardzhik. Its strategic position made it an important crossroads in the area which elevated it to the administrative centre of the region until the Liberation. The town continued to grow and trade prospered with iron, leather and rice being the main commodities. Nowadays it has a population of 25,000 and is an important craft and trade centre holding a weekly market every Tuesday and Wednesday.
It is a historic town with many attractions which include the St Bogoroditsa Church which has some of the most impressive icons and wood carvings depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments in Bulgaria.
There are good transport communications links in the town with bus and rail connections to the rest of the country.
