Nessebar is a town with 10,000 inhabitants situated 37 km northeast of the city of Bourgas. It has one of the finest beaches along the Black Sea Coast with a large sandy strip diving the town and neighbouring village of Ravda.
There is a regular bus service connecting Bourgas, Pomorie, Nessebar and Sunny Beach. You can also hire locals to take you out on their boat to visit places in the bay that cannot be reached by road.
Nessebar is one of the most popular tourist resorts with its well-preserved monuments. The Basilica here was built at the beginning of the fifth century, and the Old Bishop's Residence located in the centre of the town is probably the oldest and most impressive church in Nessebar. It is 25 metres in length and 22 metres wide with three naves and decorated with a colonnade and arches. St. Ivan the Baptist Church was built in the 11th century and is a typical cross-domed church with three naves and four columns supporting the dome. You can still see fragments of frescoes here dating back to the 13th century.
There are still remains of the fortress walls which are best preserved at the gate of the Old Town and port, together with medieval, Roman and Greek pavements. The typical houses of Diamant,Panayoti Mouskoyan and the old quarters of Nessebar are all fine examples of architecture from the sixteenth to nineteenth century demonstrating remarkable construction methods for houses, stone walls and streets. The Turkish Bath and the windmill at the start of the causeway are well worth a visit.
