The town of Montana is situated on the banks of the Ogosta River immediately next to a dam bearing the same name. This river is the natural border of the municipalities of Montana and Kozlodui and flows down from the Stara Planina Mountain passing through the small picturesque town of Chiprovtsi. The beautiful river valley of the Ogosta was originally inhabited by ancient Thracian tribes.
Montana is a regional administrative centre which is the largest transport crossroads of Northwestern Bulgaria. It is built on the ancient Roman fortress settlement of Castra ad Montanenzium (fortress in the mountain) which was also known as Montana. It was destroyed by the Barbarians and became a small but insignificant settlement during the Middle Ages.
There is an excellent bus service from Montana with regular buses to Sofia, Lom, Vidin, Belogradchik, Chiprovtsi, Berkovitsa, Vratsa and Pleven. The bus and railway station are near to each other with trains running on the Boichinovtsi-Berkovitsa line which connects with the national railway system.
