Kalofer is located 600 metres above sea level on the banks of the Tundja River between the Balkan and Stredna Gora Mountains. It is overlooked by Botev Peak which is the highest in the Balkan range.
Sofia is 158 kilometres to the west and Plovdiv is 75 kilometres to the south of Kalofer. The famous Bulgarian poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev was born here and there is large granite statue and museum displaying his works.
Some of the many attractions you can visit here include the Holy Mother of God ancient revival church; old stone bridges over the Tindga River; the Maiden Monastery on the banks of the Byala River; St Atanas church and the rose distillery.
Rose Valley where the Bulgarian oil-bearing rose grows, is on the banks of the River Striama stretching westward to the town of Kalofer and eastward as far as Tvarditsa. The soil in this area is easy to cultivate consisting of sand, loam and fertile gravel surrounded by cinnamon forests. The characteristic rainfall and cloud during the flowering period are the most important factors for obtaining large, good quality quantities of essential oil.
There is a motorway linking the town to Sofia, Karlovo and Bourgas. There is also a bus serrvice which operates from downtown every 30 minutes to Karlovo, Plovdiv and other small village every 30 minutes. There is a railway station which is 2.5 kilometres to the south east of the town which can be reached via bus. You can catch a train here to Sofia.
