Ivanovo is a small village with a population of just over 1000 people situated in North-Central Bulgaria. It is 23 kilometres southwest from the city of Rousse.
Ivanovo is famous for its Rock Monastery situated near the village. It is 32 metres above the waters of the beautiful Roussenski Lom River Canyon, and is a series of caves which were inhabited by monks between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries. Trying to get closer to God, hermit monks started to settle here by digging a network of cells, churches and chapels into the rocks. Talented artists painted them with beautiful medieval coloured frescos. During the height of the religious complex it is believed there were about 40 churches and 300 cells, but unfortunately nothing like this number exist today.
