Haskovo is situated 200 metres above sea level on the banks of the Haskopvska River which runs through the Haskovo Hills, forming part of the Eastern Rhodopes. It lies 225 km to the south-east of Sofia; 64 km south of Stara Zagora and 70 km north-west of Svilengrad.

Haskovo is one of the oldest settlements is Bulgaria dating back to the neolithic period. It celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 1985. There are good transport communication links here with a bus connecting the town to Dimitrovgrad, Harmanli, Lyubimets, Svilengrad, Stambolov and numerous other towns and villages in the surrounding region. The railway opeates along the Rousse - Toulovo - Podkova line.

The sports and leisure amenities here are excellent with the Kenana natural Park offering a variety of recreational activities. The Haskovo Mineral Baths is just 15 kilometres to the west of Haskovo (an hourly bus service runs here from the centre of town). There is an open pool and twelve mineral water springs with a temperature of 48.5°C which are excellent for joint and bone diseases, as well as some gynaecological disorders. This is also a starting point for the hiking tours which follow marked trails through the Eastern Rhodopes.

The Sharapani are about an hour's walk from the Bath and are well worth a visit. They are unique Thracian wineries with enormous grape vessels carved out of rock and connected by channels transporting the fluid.

Kalofer Information

Kalofer has a population of about 4000 and stretches along both banks of the Tundzha river. The town lies on the main road between Sofia and Burgess, 158km. east of Sofia. The biggest landmarks in the present-day town are connected with the poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev, who was born here.

Kardjali Information

Kardjali is located in the very heart of the eastern Rhodope mountain, along the two banks of the Arda river, 100 km southeast of Plovdiv. The two big dams on both sides of the town are excellent places for tourism, water sports and entertainment. Kardjali is the starting point for visits to the numerous rock formations in the region.

Kazanluk Information

The town of Kazanluk (63,000 residents) is located in the eastern part of the valley. Here is the natural geographic center of Bulgaria - a crossing of the inner and the international roads. It is called "The Town of Roses". The air here bears the fragrance of flowers. The vicinity of the town has been turned into wonderful rich gardens where the world famous roses for extracting rose oil are grown.

Haskovo City Information

Haskova is a town of 83,775 inhabitants in Southern Bulgaria not far from the borders with Greece and Turkey. The town celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 1985 and to mark the event, a new clock tower was erected in the centre of the town. The cultural life in the town is represented by the newly renovated Ivan Dimov Drama Theatre, the historical museum and an art gallery.

Suilengrad Information

With a population of approximately 20,000, Svilengrad is close to the borders of Greece and Turkey. The Town center boasts a pedestrian high street mostly filled with cafes, bars, phone shops and hotels. The Rhodope mountains lie to the west and southwest. The area to the southwest is famous for its fruit trees.
