With Greece and Turkey to the south east, Haskovo is a province in Bulgaria which encompasses parts of the Thracian Valley and the River Maritsa. The City of Haskovo occupies the most western part of the province, and because of its good transport communications links and close proximity to Greece and Turkey it is an important centre for trade, with textiles and metalworking being the main industries here. After the Liberation in 1878 it started to produce high-quality tobacco, and Bulgaria's largest cigarette manufacturing facilities are located here.
Haskovo is one of the oldest settlements in Bulgaria and it celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 1985 when a new clock tower was erected in the centre of the city. It has a population of 96,0000.
The city offers good sport and leisure amenities as well as many attractions including Hisaria which is a fortress from the Middle Ages; the Houses of the Paskalev and Shishman families which have been turned into museums. There is a recently restored drama theatre "Ivan Dimov", historical museum and an art gallery.
The city centre has received a great deal of investment and now offers some excellent street cafes, restaurants and shops.
