Gabrovo is in Northern Bulgaria is 392 metres above sea level on the banks of the Yantra River. It is situated 220 km north-east from the capital city of Sofia. The nearest airport is in the town of Gorna Oryahovitsa (60 km). The nearest river port is in Rousse (160 km), and the nearest sea port is in Bourgas (230 km).
Gabrovo is an important industrial centre with many leading machine building, electronic, and tool making plants with the textile industry, furniture and plastics manufacturing, food, wine and tobacco industries also being of great importance. Private companies have more than 60% of the business here with many international companies having their offices in the town.
The Municipality of Gabrovo and the surrounding area is one of the most ecologically clean regions in Bulgaria with rich flora and fauna including bears, red deer and mouflon which can be found in the game reserves.
Some of the local attractions include The House of Humour and Satire which has art exhibitions and collections of African ritual and carnival masks: the picturesque Etara architectural and ethnographical complex which is an unique open-air museum, the Aprilov Fountain, the Planetarium and Zoo and the 600 year old Bozhentsi village which is an architectural and historical reserve. In nearby Ouzana you will find summer and winter sports ranging from skiing to horse riding to mountain climbing. A monument to Racho Kovacha who is the legendary founder of the town, is located on a small island in the Yantra River
