Durankulak is a small but charming little village in the north east of Bulgaria and 18 km away from the town of Shabala. Durankulak is well known for its beautiful and natural lake which can be found very close to the coast of the Black Sea. With its 446.5 hectares and the valley that surrounds it, the lake is home to numerous types of plants and animals such as the Redneck Goose, the Ferruginous Duck, the Wild Carp and many other rare species. The great variety on vegetation and animals make the area a paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers. The Durankulak Lake is the most northern located coast lake in the country and is separated from the sea only by a sand stripe.
