Cherven Bryag is 110 metres above sea at the confluence of River Zlatna Panega in the River Iskar. It is 137 km northeast of Sofia, 53 km southwest of Pleven, 12 km northwest of Loukovit, 56 km east of Vratsa, and 55 km south of Oryahovo.
The first traces of man here date back to the Stone Age. Thracians once inhabited the area and ruins of Roman fortresses prove that they lived here during the first century. During the thirteenth and fourteenth century the medieval town of Cherven was one of the most important military, economic, cultural and religious centres of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The archeological reserve here includes remnants from a fortress, church and a castle. You can see the best preserved medieval tower in Bulgaria here, and a fortified underground spring which was used as a source for water during the war.
Cherven was a railway settlement in 1899 on the newly built Sofia-Varna railway line and was proclaimed a town in 1929. It is a large terminus on the Sofia - Gorna Oryahovitsa - Varna (Rousse) line. Cherven Bryag is the starting point of a narrow-gauge railway line to Byala Slatina and Oryahovo, as well as a normal line to Loukovit and Zlatna Panega. The town has a regular bus service to Pleven, Vratsa, Loukovit, Byala and Slatina.
