Bourgas is the second largest city on the Black Sea Coast and fourth largest city in Bulgaria with a population of over 200,000. It is located at the westernmost part of Bourgas Bay, 390 km east of the capital Sofia.
Bourgas International Airport operates regular flights to Sofia every day and handles a large number of charter flights from the UK and Germany during the summer months. There is a railway station here with connections to all of Bulgaria with an express train to Sofia taking less than six and a half hours. The bus station operates services to most of the larger cities. Also many private carriers offer transport to coastal towns and resorts to the north and south of Bourgas.
This is a beautiful city surrounded by the Atanassovo, Bourgas and Mandren lagoon-lakes. Just outside the city centre on a hill is the Shady Sea Garden which is a lovely place to stroll on hot summer days. It is full in flowers, trees and sculptures and has a casino, small zoo and open air theatre which stages the annual International Folklore and Golden Orpheus Festivals . A unique verdure stairway leads from the park to the central beach. It is this unusual dark colour because of the mixture of magnetite alloys. The other beach to the north of the city is close to the Izgrev Quarter, and adjacent to the salt-mines.
The city of Bourgas offers many attractions including the District Museum of History with its archaeological hall exhibiting a fascinating collection of items from to the ancient colonies along the Black Sea Coast. The Ethnographic Museum is situated in a cultural monument and has masks of koukeri, traditional costumes, ritual accessories, fabrics and embroidery. The Methodius Cathedral near the market place has marvellous frescos and a wooden altar.
The city offers lively evening entertainment with a huge range of restaurants and bars to choose from. Some of the most famous places to eat are the National, Staryat Pristan, Starata Gemiya and Bourgaska Sreshta. It is generally inexpensive to eat out here as food is cheap.
