The small town of Belogradchik has just 6,685 inhabitants and is situated 520 metres above sea level in a beautiful natural environment between the Venetsa and Vedernik mountains. It is located 182 km. northwest from Sofia, 68 km. to the northwest of Montana, 52 km. southwest from Vidin.
Belogradchik is an old settlement which originated during the first century when the Romans built a fortress among the rocks. It was demolished many times and rebuilt by the Byzantines, Bulgarians and Turks. After the Liberation in 1878 it gradually became a tourist centre, and attracts thousands of visitors every year because of its Belogradchik rocks which are one of the most beautiful natural landmarks in Bulgaria.
It is worth a visit to the Kaleto fortress which is one of the best preserved in the country and Rabishkata cave or Magurata which formed nearly four million years ago can be found near the village of Rabisha which is 34 km. to the northwest of Belogradchik.
There is a regular bus service to Sofia, Montana , Vidin and other smaller settlements in the region. The Oreshets railway station is 12 km out of town but can be reached by bus.
