Like the majority of all the other towns, villages and cities that are situated in Bulgaria, Balchik also has a long history. The town changed its name three times, from Krunoi to Dionysopolis and from Dionysopolis to Balik which is a variant of the name it has now. It is also said that Aphrodite - the goddess of beauty - was born out of the sea foam there. Balchik is 36 km to the north east of the city of Varna and is one of the most beautiful towns in the area. Besides the harbour that can be found there, the town of Balchik has also many other points of interest. There is a beautiful palace located in the town which was built as a summer residence for the Queen Marie of Romania. The palace is surrounded by 35 hectares of blooming and flowering gardens in which a high tower, numerous paths, summer houses, terraces, a chapel and even the throne where Queen Marie used to enjoy the views are located. Several museums, the St. Nikola Church and numerous excellent restaurants which are serving local and international dishes are other highlights of the town. Those who want to explore the surrounding area can take advantage of either the taxis or the buses that are running regularly to and from many towns, cities and villages in the region.
